Flanged Steel Pipe Fittings.
In piping systems, flanged fittings are a kind of connector that joins two pieces of machinery or pipes together. They are made up of a fitting (such a valve, tee, or elbow) that is fastened to a flange, which is a flat, circular plate. In industrial environments including chemical plants, power generation facilities, and oil refineries, flanged fittings are frequently utilized.
Flanged fittings offer several benefits, including:
1. Easy installation and maintenance.
2. High pressure and temperature ratings.
3. Leak-tight connections.
4. Flexibility in piping layout.

What is Flanged Fittings ?
One or both ends of flanged tube fittings may have one or more flanges. A pipeline system is made up of pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment connected by flanges. Bolts are usually used to link flanged fittings together, and a gasket is used to provide a seal (Figure 2). Other connecting techniques, including as fusion bonding and welding, are available for particular applications. The application in question, the pressure rating, and the required level of disassembly ease all influence the joining technique selection. Types of Flanged fittings.
1. Flanged elbows: Elbows with flanges connected to them are referred to as flanged elbows. They are employed to alter the pipe run’s direction. They are available at different angles, most frequently 45° and 90°.
2. Flanged tees: Fittings with a flanged tee shape are called flanged tees. They are employed to divide or mix media flow. Straight tees have three identical ends with the same diameter, while decreasing tees have one smaller port than the other two.
2. Flanged tees: Fittings with a flanged tee shape are called flanged tees. They are employed to divide or mix media flow. Straight tees have three identical ends with the same diameter, while decreasing tees have one smaller port than the other two.
3. Flanged reducers: These connectors join pipes with varying diameters. To handle varying pipe diameters, they include a flange on either end, one larger than the other.
4. Flanged crosses: Though they have four apertures in four directions, these resemble tees. When four pipes come together at one location, these are utilized.
5. Flanged adapters: One end of an adapter may be flanged, while the other may have a threaded or butt-weld connection type. Pipes with various end connections are connected using these.
6. Flanged valves: Flanges are commonly used to connect flanged pipes and fittings to gate, globe, check, ball, and butterfly valves. For a comparison of flanged and screwed valve types, see our article on flanged vs. screwed valves.
7. Flanged strainers and filters: To filter out undesirable particles from the fluid, flanged strainers are inserted in the pipeline. The flanges facilitate connections with additional pipeline parts.
8. Flanged expansion joints: In pipe systems, flanged expansion joints absorb terminal movement or thermal expansion. These connectors are flexible and include flanges on both ends.
Flange fitting materials.
Material type | Characteristics | Applications | Specifications/grades |
Carbon Steel | Cast iron flanged fittings are strong, cost-effective, moderate to high-temperature resistance | Oil and gas, petrochemical, water supply systems | ASTM A105 |
Stainless Steel | Flanged stainless steel fittings are corrosion-resistant, and used at a wide range of temperatures | Water, steam, gas, and chemical transport | Stainless steel 304, 316 and 321 |
Alloy Steel | Increased strength, corrosion resistance due to other alloying elements like Cr, Mo, and Ni | High-pressure and high-temperature environments, power plants, refineries | ASTM A182 |
Duplex & Super Duplex Stainless Steel | Higher strength and superior corrosion resistance compared to standard stainless steel | Offshore, marine, chemical processing | Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507 |
Nickel Alloys | Excellent resistance to heat and corrosion, used in highly corrosive environments | Chemical processing, marine, aerospace, oil and gas | Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Incoloy |
Copper/Copper alloys | Flange copper pipe fittings have good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance | Heat exchangers, water supply systems | C11000 (Copper), C36000 (Free-cutting Brass), C61400 (Aluminum Bronze) |
Plastics | Flanged PVC pipe fittings are lightweight, excellent chemical resistance, used in low-pressure applications | Chemical processing, water treatment, sewage | PVC, CPVC, PP, PVDF |
Composite Materials | Resistance to chemical attack, suitable for highly corrosive environments | Chemical processing, water treatment, sewage | FRP, thermoplastic-lined composites |
Pressure rating:
Flanges are rated by class, which relates to the maximum pressure the flange can handle. Common classes include 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 for ASME/ANSI B16.5 and B16.47 standards. Read our flange rating article for more information.
The exact dimensions for each flange size and pressure class can be found in the relevant standards. Some of the most commonly used standards are:
ASME/ANSI B16.5: Covers pipe flanges and flanged fittings for sizes NPS ½” to 24” for above NPS 24” to 60”.
ASME/ANSI B16.47: Covers large diameter steel flanges for NPS 26” to 60”.
EN 1092-1: European standard for steel flanges.
ISO 7005-1: International standard for steel flanges.
